I’ve been wrestling with similar things lately. I don’t know that I believe in a God of rescue anymore, but I do still believe in a God of presence. But the implications of that have been a lot to sort through.

Thank you for sharing, this. Yes. Quite honestly I’ve had to rethink and reframe the classical understandings of God I assumed were essential and impervious to question, such as omnipotence and irrefutable intervention in horrendous places and moments of our lives. The truth is much more complex, and sometimes disappointing. But that presence... it is what is keeping me.

I appreciate you naming that the truth can be disappointing. I sometimes feel like I’m not allowed to feel disappointed by truth that relates to God. The presence is what keeps me participating in a life of faith as well.
